New research, data yield immunization developments: Localized outbreaks lead ACIP to reconsider hepatitis A advice

Recent hepatitis A outbreaks in select states have led to consideration of the revision of recommendations for routine hepatitis A immunization by the Advisory Committee Immunization Practices (ACIP).

The revised recommendations call for routine hepatitis A immunization for children living in states where the average annual hepatitis A rate during 1987-97 was at least 20 per 100,000 population (i.e., approximately two times the national average). ACIP's recommendations state:
