Academy, CDC fight birth defects with new folic acid cam paign

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is appealing to AAP members to help in the prevention of spina bifida and other neural tube defects by encouraging use of the B vitamin folic acid among women of reproductive age.

The Academy, in partnership with the CDC and other primary care provider groups, formed the National Council on Folic Acid. The council's mission is to educate and motivate women to consume adequate amounts of folic acid to help prevent birth defects.
