White House Conference on School Safety

Sherry Trust Llewellyn

How can schools, families and communities work together to make sure that every child is safe in every school in America? That was the challenge presented Oct. 15 to participants at the White House Conference on School Safety — Causes and Prevention of Youth Violence. The Academy was represented at the conference by Howard Spivak, M.D., chair of the AAP Task Force on Violence. Dr. Spivak was one of the few health professionals invited to participate in the meeting of approximtely 100 youth violence experts.

Conference objectives were: to build on existing knowledge about violence and aggression in young people; listen and learn from experts about school safety; share best practices; explore new solutions; and develop strategies to implement safety models in schools and communities across the country.
