As a pediatrician, you might have faced trying to help a parent whose child has lost disability benefits from the Supplemental Security Income Program (SSI). Given the recent figures from the Social Security Administration (SSA), your patient is not alone. Of the mandated redetermination cases completed by Nov. 1, 135,800 of 263,000 children lost SSI benefits, according to the SSA. Of those who lost benefits, 82 percent are children with mental disorders or mental retardation. The allowance (acceptance) rate is even lower among new childhood claims.
