AAP News Vol. 14 No. 3 March 1998, p. 12 © 1998 American Academy of Pediatrics
Where does Neonatology really belong? Who are our collaborators? Where do we find support and who speaks for our interests? Are we pediatricians, pediatric specialists, perinatologists or "hospitalists?" Within the Academy we are only 3,000 of 53,000; nationally we are clearly a very small medical minority without a vocal or voting constituency. In most cases our success, our "cut of the pie," our salary and benefits package, and our ability to establish contracts and contract rates is dependent upon the interest, support and approval of others in particular, hospital administrators, practice plan managers and deans/vice presidents of health science.
