The past two decades have seen dramatic improvements in survival rates for pediatric brain tumor patients, according to a New York report. Annual mortality rates from pediatric brain cancer declined from two deaths per 100,000 patients to less than 0.9 deaths per 100,000 patients, the report stated. Children treated by an experienced multidisciplinary team had better outcomes than children treated with identical protocols in facilities with less experience, they stated. Therefore, pediatricians should be aware of classification, diagnosis, progressive treatment and technology. Tumors should be described according to their treatment requirements and long-term outlook, rather than sorted between benign and malignant, the study suggested.
