Clinton's 1999 budget agenda

Gem Benoza

On Feb. 2 President Clinton submitted to Congress the first balanced budget in 30 years. He thus made the first move what will be a series of political and legislative Jockeying over the next few months as Congress crafts a final budget for fiscal year (FY) 1999.

At press time, the Academy was in the process of reviewing and analyzing the president's budget to determine how it supports preventive and other health services, research, and education and training of pediatricians.

From its preliminary review, overall the Academy is pleased with the support the administration is proposing for child and adolescent health care programs. Specifically, the Academy agreed with the strong emphasis on critical children's health issues such as Medicaid outreach, child care, tobacco control and pediatric research.
