Tobacco control heats up Congress

Gem Benoza

With Congress back in session, tobacco legislation continued to dominate-debate on Capitol Hill.

The Academy, along with its partners in the ENACT (Effective National Action to Control Tobacco) coalition, continued to stress the need for comprehensive tobacco control legislation in this session of Congress. Although momentum is still strong, some members of Congress have indicated a willingness to look at a less comprehensive and more targeted approach, possibly a bill that would simply raise tobacco excise taxes.

The ENACT coalition believes that Congress should not take a piece-meal approach to this problem, that there is no "silver-bullet" solution to deter youth access and appeal of tobacco products. Thus, the Academy remains committed to passing comprehensive legislation this year.
