Music boosts memory retrieval in young infants, according to a New York study. In two experiments lasting 17 minutes each, researchers trained 3-month-old infants to move an overhead crib mobile while classical or jazz music played in the background. In Experiment 1, researchers tied a ribbon from the infant's leg to the mobile, enabling movement to occur when the infant kicked. Trained observers recorded the number of kicks per minute. Experiment 1 was repeated after one day and after seven days to determine infant memory retrieval. In some groups, music selections changed from classical to jazz.
