Virginia SCHIP hits gubernatorial snag as 5 other states win approval

Luann Zanzola

As other states progress with Title XXI, the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), Virginia hit a wall of politics that all but totaled its SCHIP vehicle.

Virginia's SCHIP bill was vetoed April 8 by Gov. James Gilmore III, reported Bill Moskowitz, M.D., of Richmond, chair of the Virginia AAP Chapter's Government Affairs Committee. He is a pediatric cardiologist.

"We are already involved with press releases stating our outrage and our sadness," Dr. Moskowitz said a few hours after the veto of Senate Bill 433, which AAP members had labored over for nearly a year.
