Down syndrome is among the most common genetic conditions and is the most common chromosome disorder, affecting 1 in 700 live births. Since recognized in 1959 as being caused by a trisomy for chromosome 21, many aspects of managing the condition have changed, but unfortunately, little has been accomplished to reverse the almost universal feature of mental retardation.
