Measuring exhaled nitric oxide (NO) in children with acute asthma may be a noninvasive method of monitoring airway inflammation, according to an Italian study. Researchers assessed effects of oral steroid therapy on exhaled NO levels in 16 children with acute asthma, ages 6 to 13 years, recruited from the emergency care department, and in 16 healthy controls. For measurement of NO levels, children were asked to wear a nose clip and breathe through a mouthpiece.
