While most teens are aware of calcium's positive effects on health and bone strength, few are aware of its other benefits or of their owm daily calcium needs, a survey of 1,117 ninth-graders showed. The anonymous survey, obtained after parental consent, consisted of a 24-hour dietary recall and 14 questions on students' calcium knowledge. The sample was 52 percent female, 48 percent male and drew from five Rhode Island public high schools. Teens were asked to list their height and weight, and researchers then calculated body mass index (BMI).
