Making condoms available to high school students does not appear to lead to increased sexual activity in teens and seems to promote greater condom use among males, according to a California study. Researchers surveyed 1,945 ninth- through 12th-graders in Los Angeles County before a condom program began in April 1992, and 1,110 of the students again a year later. Students completed an anonymous, self-administered questionnaire covering demographic information; knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about sex, sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy and contraception; specific sexual behaviors; and condom use.
