A decrease in the number of children with elevated blood lead levels has prompted the Academy to revise its policy statement on lead screening. The percentage of U.S. children ages 1 to 5 years with blood lead levels The new guidelines, developed by the AAP Committee on Environmental Health and approved by the Board of Directors, were published in the June Pediatrics. The guidelines support the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendation to use targeted blood screening, instead of universal screening, for lead.
