When the tornado touched down, Children's Hospital (Birmingham, Ala.) went to Phase 1 disaster alert. Our level one pediatric trauma center was prepared as well as it could be for a disaster. Teams of pediatricians, trauma surgeons, nurses, social workers, chaplains, public relations, clerical support, radiographers, laboratory and blood bank technicians, and administrators were notified and began making their way to Children's Hospital under storm-laden skies. Emergency medicine specialists and pediatric residents began standard preparations by discharging noncritical patients from the Emergency Department (ED) and communicating with other physicians about the tornado touchdown.
