Michigan leader honored as child health advocate

Michigan Lt. Gov. Connie Binsfeld received the AAP 1998 Child Health Advocate Award for leading successful efforts to reform the state's adoption policies and improve its child welfare system.

The Academy gives the award annually to a state or local government official who has made outstanding contributions to children's health and safety.

"Lt. Gov. Binsfeld's experience and talent in working so tirelessly on behalf of the children of Michigan is a source of great inspiration to pediatricians and many other children's advocates," said AAP President Joseph R. Zanga, M.D.

In her first term, Binsfeld chaired the 12-member Binsfeld Special Commission on Adoption, spearheading creation of 67 recommendations that resulted in a legislative overhaul of the state's adoption system.
