For most pediatricians, managed care can be daunting. They must continue in their chief role as advocates for children, yet focus on the prerequisites for business success, such as acquiring management information systems (MIS) and skilled managerial assistance. They typically have three options: maintain the status quo, battle managed care growth, or take a proactive stance and create innovative relationships. To some primary care pediatricians, pediatric medical subspecialists and pediatric surgical specialists, even the proactive approach implies "selling out" to a hospital, a physician practice management company or another entity.
