Varicella vaccine is recommended for routine use in all healthy children age 12 months and older who lack a reliable history of varicella. More than 10 million doses of live attenuated varicella-zoster-virus (VZV) vaccine have been distributed in this country since it was licensed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in March 1995. However, many eligible children have not received VZV vaccine because some physicians have not encouraged its use. Michael Gerber, M.D., and Leonard Weiner, M.D., AAP Committee on Infectious Diseases members, offer the following responses to common questions about this vaccine.
