Workshop teaches physicians how to start literacy program

Pediatricians have a special opportunity to promote literacy development and love of books in their young patients through the Reach Out and Read program. Reach Out and Read has been replicated in more than 300 sites, ranging from office settings to health centers and hospital clinics.

The AAP Annual Meeting workshop, "Reach Out and Read: Encouraging Literacy Development in Your Pediatric Practice," will prepare pediatricians to set up their own Reach Out and Read programs. Participants will learn how to incorporate literacy advice into anticipatory guidance for children ages 6 months to 5 years. They also will learn how to use books as tools in evaluating and promoting child development. How to obtain start-up funding for books and all necessary materials will be discussed.
