AAP offers alternatives to proposed Reye Syndrome rules

Mandatory Reye Syndrome warning labels, called for in regulations proposed by federal officials, fail to explain the association between aspirin and the syndrome, the Academy argued in a recent letter to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

"Although the proposed wording is commendably brief and prominent, it fails to explain the association between aspirin and Reye Syndrome which a succession of studies has demonstrated," AAP President Martin H. Smith, M.D., wrote, citing a recent New England Journal of Medicine article.
