In an attempt to discourage "courtroom lotteries," state legislatures all over the country are dealing with tort reform and, in many cases, changing the laws which govern child malpractice suits. In 41 states, tort reforms were proposed during the 1986 legislative session. In the states that did not consider reforms, bills have been drafted and interest groups have mobilized in anticipation of the 1987 legislative session. The Academy has focused its tort reform efforts on promoting shortened statutes of limitations for minors in states where the statute does not begin until a minor reaches the age of majority.
