WASHINGTON UPDATE

Compensation compromise: Vaccine injury progress

With time running out in this congressional session, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and Rep. Edward Madigan (R-Ill.) have hammered out a compromise on vaccine injury compensation legislation.

The new bipartisan bill (H.R. 5546) was approved by a House committee in mid-September. At press time, H.R. 5546 had gained numerous cosponsors and was moving toward a vote on the House floor.

"The fact that Mr. Madigan has co-signed onto this bill with Mr. Waxman means this bill will have considerable clout as it goes to the floor," AAP President Martin H. Smith, M.D., told AAP chapter officials at a meeting last month.
