MDs and corporate medicine

Thomas James III M.D., FAAP1

1 Regional Medical Director Health America Norfolk, Va.

I was very interested in the "Insight" column in the June 1986 AAP News. I believe that the author, AAP President Martin H. Smith, M.D., is correct in assessing that most pediatricians in the fee-for-service sector are very concerned about the impact financially of organized systems of health care. I certainly would expect that organized systems would be competitive to independent practices.

On the other hand, the establishment of other pediatricians in the same community would also represent a source of competition. I believe, therefore, the concern over the interjection of "corporate" medicine needs to be more precisely defined.
