Poster distributed last summer should not be displayed

Academy members are reminded that a poster distributed last summer regarding DTP vaccination and possible adverse reactions should not be displayed.

The poster, which was printed in blue ink, contains incorrect figures regarding the projected number of deaths that could result from pertussis in the absence of an immunization program.

The numbers are accurate as direct extrapolation between the number of pertussis deaths based on the childhood census of 1934 — the peak year for whooping cough — and the census of the same population in 1984. However, the numbers do not reflect the progress of medical technology which would lower the expected death toll today.
