HELPING HANDS

If all goes well for the Hands Across America event, people from California to New York will be holding hands to raise up to $100 million for America's hungry and homeless.

The ambitious project, endorsed by the Academy and a long list of corporate and nonprofit organizations, will require more than 5 million people to join hands at 3 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time in a continuous chain starting by the Pacific Ocean near Los Angeles and ending at the Statue of Liberty. The participants will sing "We are the World," "America the Beautiful" and the "Hands Across America" theme, which debuted on March 27 when 6,000 radio stations played the song simultaneously.
