Chiles reveals infant mortality plans at Spring Session

Speaking during his keynote address at the AAP Spring Meeting last month, Sen. Lawton Chiles (D-Fla.) announced proposals to curtail U.S. infant mortality and to improve prenatal care for poor pregnant women.

Chiles applauded the efforts of the medical community that have resulted in generally declining infant mortality rates during the past 20 years. But he cited two basic problems that must now be addressed greater access to medical treatment, and greater access to early pregnancy and nutrition counseling.

He noted legislation he introduced in early April that would strengthen the Medicaid program to provide low-income pregnant women with prenatal care.
