There is no conclusive evidence of an association between sugar and behavior, Mark Wolraich, M.D., FAAP, explained during a plenary session and news briefing at the AAP Spring Session last month. Accordingly, parents who restrict their child's sugar intake probably won't tone down the child's hyperactivity, although many parents think otherwise. Medical professionals today are challenging past studies that show sugar has an effect on a child's behavior, said Dr. Wolraich, associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Iowa.
