Although U.S. infant mortality rates have been steadily declining since the early 1960s, the rate of decline in recent years has slowed considerably. National infant mortality rates dropped from 26 percent in 1960 to 10.6 percent in 1984, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. But while the average decline in the 1970s was 4.5 percent a year, the rate declined by just 3.4 percent in 1982, and 2.6 percent in 1983. Provisional figures for 1984 show a similar trend, with a drop of just 2.8 percent.
