While the full ramifications of the Supreme Court ruling on Baby Doe have yet to be determined, the Academy has affirmed that the ruling will help protect infants' rights to medically sound and humane treatment. In an initial review of the decision, the Academy was pleased that the ruling invalidates the government's contention that Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of handicap, applies to critically ill infants.
