FAAPs have multi-sided role in alcohol abuse prevention

Alcohol has a multitude of negative effects on children, their parents, the health care system, and society in general. Many of these effects are profound and disastrous. Pediatricians who are aware of the prevalence and nature of these consequences will take more active roles in prevention, intervention and treatment. A medical or family history that does not specifically address alcohol use and attitudes about use cannot be considered complete. Questions should begin at a prenatal visit and at intervals thereafter.
