The safety of the nest

In 1978, Dr. J. Julian Chisolm Jr., of Baltimore published an editorial in Pediatrics titled "Fouling One's Own Nest."1 This landmark editorial describes cases of lead poisoning, berylliosis, mesothelioma, chloracne, hyperestrogenism, and toxic hepatitis in the children of industrial workers. All of these episodes had in common that they were caused by childrens' exposure to toxic substances inadvertently transported home from contaminated workplaces by their unsuspecting parents.
