WASHINGTON UPDATE

Tuning out TV violence

During Congressional testimony last month, health officials and television industry executives debated the merits of two bills aimed at reducing television violence.

One bill seeks to provide broad cast stations and trade associations with a limited exemption from antitrust laws. The exemption would only permit joint action to review, consider, evaluate and take action concerning the possible harmful effects of broadcast material.

The second bill would direct the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to oversee a study regarding television violence and to report their findings to Congress within one year.
