Health clinics and other village services for children in Third World countries are often run by people with "limited means." That could mean an illiterate village midwife, whose knowledge of modern medicine is often fairly scant, said Derrick Jelliffe, M.D. Speaking at the International Congress of Pediatrics, Dr. Jelliffe, professor of public health and pediatrics at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA), stressed the need for simpler methods to detect malnutrition in children.
