A new awakening

"It is with pleasure on behalf of the American Academy of Pediatrics that I welcome pediatricians from around the world to this International Congress of Pediatrics. It has been 40 years since the Academy sponsored a Congress. It is a special pleasure for us to have the honor of sponsoring this Congress after such a long lapse of time.

"We believe that there is a new awakening of interest in our country in international child health. Our Academy budget may seem large to some, but unfortunately it does not include any surplus that we can devote to international child health needs — and we recognize that those needs are endless. Nevertheless, we have a large membership with a great deal of expertise in international child health and an interest to devote more of our time to this cause. We hope that the Academy can become a more effective conduit for channeling this interest and expertise to greater use in the future than we have in the past decades.
