Hawaii Chapter Chairman Cal Sia, M.D. (left), presents the AAP Excellence in Public Service Award to Sen. Daniel K. Inouye (D-Hawaii) as AAP President Martin H. Smith, M.D., stands by. Inouye was instrumental in getting the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) to direct research money to injury research. He played a role in encouraging the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to set up demonstration projects for pediatric emergency medicine and getting priority funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation for training and education of paramedics.
