Survey reveals some surprises in attitudes toward prepaid plans

A recent survey sheds light on pediatricians' perceptions of the advantages and disadvantages that prepaid health plans offer them and their patients.

The survey was developed by AAP District VIII Chairman Donald W. Schiff, M.D., and conducted with assistance from the AAP Department of Research.

The survey was sent in May 1986 by Dr. Schiff to 200 randomly-selected AAP Fellows. Of the 118 Fellows who replied, 82 respondents were caring for patients in prepaid plans. Of the remaining 36 who answered, many indicated they were about to join a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) or a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), Dr. Schiff said.
