WASHINGTON UPDATE

DTP price hikes examined

Sen. Howard Metzenbaum (D-Ohio) asked the U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) last month to investigate recent substantial price increases in the DTP vaccine.

In May 1986, Lederle Laboratories announced that it was increasing the price of the 15-dose vial of DTP vaccine to $171 — almost a 248 percent increase. Lederle said the price increase was needed to cover rising liability costs. Lederle said $120 of the new price would be reserved for product liability.
