As an expert witness in a medical liability case, you are asked to evaluate the decisions and course of action of another pediatrician or family physician caring for a child. You need not be a subspecialist in order to serve. Thus it was when I was asked by a young attorney in a firm that specializes in defending doctors in cases of alleged malpractice if I would review the records of a 5-year-old child whose parents were bringing suit. Basically the allegation was "failure to diagnose," in this case, appendicitis.
