During a three-month period at two Seattle hospitals, 19 children were brought in with serious head injuries, resulting from bicycle accidents. This became the impetus for an all-out campaign to convince area children to wear bicycle helmets. Washingtons pediatricians knew the task wouldn't be easy, however. A survey of four pediatric offices in the. Seattle area showed that less than I percent of children-aged 8-12 years owned bicycle helmets.
