As the summer and lawnmowing months are already upon us, it is important to warn parents of the potential dangers to children from ride-on mowers. A May 1988 Hazard Report, "Hazard Analysis of Ride-On Mowers"1/ by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, estimated that approximately 19,100 ride-on mower injuries and 75 deaths occur annually in the United States. Twenty-five percent (4,770) of the injuries and 30 percent of the deaths (23) occurred in children. Most of the injured children were younger than lO years of age and almost all of the deaths occurred in children 6 years of age or younger. The most common methods of injury were: (1) runover or backover by another driver; (2) falls from a mower on which they were riding; and (3) falls from a trailer being pulled by a mower. Although the majority of injuries and deaths were in the nonoperator category, 14 percent of all injuries occurred when children between 5 and 16 years of age were operating the mower.
