Corporal punishment is ineffective, harmful

Lawrence Balter Ph.D.1

1 Professor of applied psychology New York University

Dr. Frederic P. Nelson's letter (AAP News, Dec. 1990) concerning Dr. Arthur Cherry's comments on corporal punishment (AAP News, Oct. 1990) requires a rejoinder. Dr. Cherry quite correctly argues against using physical punishment on children.

Dr. Nelson's literal reliance on biblical references to support the practice of hurting children is unfortunate. His citations flout virtually every shred of scientific evidence concerning the effects of various forms of discipline on children's behavior.
