Water beds have increased in popularity since their introduction approximately 25 years ago. In 1988, approximately 3.8 million water beds were sold in the United States. Up to 20 percent of American homes have water beds. However, as popular as they are, they can become a suffocation hazard for infants and disabled children if they are used improperly. In 1851, William Hooper designed the first water bed. His bed was based on Archemedes' Principle of Displacement in order to achieve weightlessness for bed-ridden patients.
