Washington, D.C., to host Pediatric Academic Societies' meeting

Whether you are interested in the latest pediatric research, educational workshops or hot topics, the 2005 Pediatric Academic Societies' meeting is for you.

The annual meeting, sponsored by the Academy, the American Pediatric Society, the Society for Pediatric Research and the Ambulatory Pediatric Association, will be held May 14-17 in Washington, D.C.

This year's meeting will feature advances and breakthroughs in every aspect of academic pediatrics, including research, education, practice and public policy.

The heart of the program is the original science presentations (abstracts), which give members, guests and trainees of the societies an opportunity to present their work.

Attendees also can take advantage of a variety of program formats:

  • State-of-the-art plenary sessions update and solidify understanding in interdisciplinary areas of pediatric medicine.
  • Topic symposia address issues and controversies around topics of interest to a particular audience.
  • Hot topics focus on areas of rapid clinical discovery and controversial issues.
  • Mini courses address topics of interest to all attendees and usually are targeted to new, broad-based clinical strategies.
  • Meet the Professor breakfast sessions give trainees and junior faculty the chance to meet with senior academic physicians who provide insights in their field or career guidance.
  • Workshops include didactic presentations, interactive discussions and hands-on techniques.
  • Special interest groups are informal sessions organized around specific areas of interest to academic and community pediatricians.

Program highlights include:

  • Clinical trial registries: Implications for pediatric research and practice
  • Community-acquired staphylococcal disease: New twists for a traditional pediatric pathogen
  • Global environmental health
  • Medical home: Moving from a concept to a program to a national initiative
  • New therapeutic strategies for classic pediatric diseases
  • Pediatric neuropharmacology – current controversies

The AAP Presidential Plenary will be held on May 15 and is targeted to scientists and clinicians interested in the translation of research and evidence-based principles into health policy and practice.
