Two PREP courses offer intensive review

Two continuing medical education courses will provide intensive reviews of pediatrics: "PREP The Course An Intensive Review of Pediatrics" will be held Sept. 10-14 in Portland, Ore., and "NeoPREP An Intensive Review of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine" is set for Sept. 18-24 in San Diego.

At the 2005 PREP The Course, for preparation for the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) Program for Maintenance of Certification in Pediatrics, topics and faculty include:

  • Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, with Lisa M. Hoeft Albers, M.D., M.P.H., FAAP, instructor in pediatrics, Harvard Medical School, Boston;
  • General Pediatrics, with Joseph A. Zenel, M.D., FAAP, associate professor and vice chair of pediatrics, Doernbecher Children's Hospital, Oregon Health and Sciences University, Portland;
  • Cardiology, with Candace L. Gibbin, M.D., M.S.P.H., FACC, FAAP, assistant clinical professor of pediatrics, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia;
  • Emergency Medicine, with Mark Adler, M.D., FAAP, assistant professor of pediatrics, Children's Memorial Hospital, Chicago; and
  • Infectious Diseases, with Mark J. Abzug, M.D., FAAP, professor of pediatrics, University of Colorado School of Medicine and The Children's Hospital, Denver.

The NeoPREP course, for preparation for the Program for Maintenance of Certification in Pediatric Subspecialties in neonatal-perinatal medicine administered by the ABP, will include:

  • Evaluation of Fetal Well Being, with Robert Resnik, M.D., FACOG, professor of reproductive medicine, University of California San Diego School of Medicine;
  • Hematologic Disorders, with Robert D. Christensen, M.D., FAAP, Edwin M. Dixon Professor of Pediatrics, University of Alabama, Birmingham;
  • Surgical Emergencies in the Newborn, with Mary L. Hilfiker, M.D., Ph.D., FACS, FAAP, associate professor, University of California, San Diego; and
  • Evaluating Pulmonary Function, with Vinod Bhutani, M.D., FAAP, clinical professor of pediatrics, Division of Neonatal-Developmental Medicine, Stanford University, Calif.

Participants can earn up 35.5 (PREP The Course) or 54 (NeoPREP) hours in category 1 credits toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award.
