An early leader in the prevention of childhood injuries, George M. Wheatley, M.D., M.P.H., FAAP, of Glen Cove, N.Y., died June 26. He was 99.

For 33 years, he served Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. as medical director (1941-’69), vice president and chief medical director (1969-’74). Through his involvement with the company, he became a childhood injury and poison prevention advocate. He helped advocate for the reduction of lead in paint, closures for medicine bottles and prevention of flammability of children’s clothing. He continued his advocacy efforts through AAP committees, as AAP District 2 chair (1954-’59) and as AAP president (1960-’61). In 1950, he founded the AAP Accident Prevention Committee and served as its inaugural chair and member until 1955. He worked with the late Edward Press, M.D., FAAP, to push for the establishment of poison control centers nationwide.

Dr. Wheatley chaired the AAP Committees on Rheumatic Fever, Environmental Hazards and International Child Health and was a member of the AAP Committees on School Health, Improvement of Child Health and Third Party Payment Plans as well as the Nominating Committee and Section Committee on Public Health Pediatrics.

In 1964, he received the AAP Clifford G. Grulee Award for improving child health in capacities other than president and district chairman. He was recognized with the AAP Fellow Achievement Award in 1993 for exceptional contributions to injury and poison prevention.

Dr. Wheatley received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School (1933), completed a residency in pediatrics at Johns Hopkins Hospital (1935-’36) and New York Post Graduate School (1936-’37). In 1942, he received an M.P.H. degree from Columbia University. From 1937-’41, he served as principal pediatrician with the New York Health Department.

In 1974, he took a position as medical director of the Suffolk County (New York) Department of Social Services for 22 years.

He is survived by four children, 15 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
