Questions raised over ICD-9-CM codes that took effect Oct. 1

Is there a new code for colic?

Yes. As of Oct. 1, 2009, code 789.7 should be reported for patients diagnosed with colic.

A patient presented to the office for a nursemaid’s elbow. What ICD-9-CM code should we report?

You should report code 832.2 (Nursemaid’s elbow).

My physician diagnosed a newborn with slow feeding. What ICD-9-CM code should I use?

You should report code 779.31 (Feeding problems in newborn).

A patient presented to our office with a confirmed case of novel influenza A H1N1 virus (swine flu). He still has symptoms. What ICD-9 code should we use?

You should report code 488.1 (Influenza due to identified novel H1N1 influenza virus).

A newborn that my physician saw in the hospital was diagnosed with moderate hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. What code should I use for that diagnosis?

A new subset of codes was added for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. You should report code 768.72 (Moderate hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy).

In the past, we used ICD-9 codes to describe the symptoms of an apparent life-threatening event (ALTE). Is there now a code for an ALTE?

Yes. A code for ALTE was created to better track its occurrence. You should report code 799.82 for a patient who is diagnosed with an ALTE.

A 2-week-old baby came in for her first well-baby check. I see that new codes were added for babies 28 days of age and younger. Do we use these in addition to the V20.2 code?

There are two new health supervision diagnosis codes for patients 28 days and younger. These new codes should not be used in addition to a V20.2. For this patient, you would report code V20.32 (Health supervision for newborn 8 to 28 days old). The other new code (V20.31) is reported for a health supervision exam for a newborn under 8 days of age.
