Dr. Holroyd led Academy in media, injury prevention issues
Namesake of the AAP Holroyd-Sherry Award along with colleague S. Norman Sherry, M.D., FAAP, Dr. Holroyd was instrumental in the initiation of the Academys investigation into medias relationship to a variety of factors affecting children, including aggression, violence, substance abuse, obesity, sexuality, body image, self concept and school performance. Dr. Holroyd chaired the AAP ad hoc Task Force on Children and Television (1983-85), which authored the first policy on televisions role in childrens lives. He served on the Committee on Communications from 1993-98 and was Media Resource Team chair from 1994-96. He also was a key resource during the establishment of the television ratings system for parents. From 1979-83, he served as chair of the AAP Committee on Accident and Poison Prevention. He was instrumental in the development of infant automobile safety seats and the First Ride Safe Ride program for infant and child car seats. While on the accident and poison prevention committee, he helped launch a nationwide program aimed at making anticipatory guidance counseling on injury prevention a routine part of health supervision visits. He also was chair of the AAP Council on Adolescent Health from 1985-89. Dr. Holroyd earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1952 and did his pediatric residency at Strong Memorial Hospital, University of Rochester, N.Y., from 1954-56. He served in the U.S. Air Force at Tripler Army Hospital Hickam Air Force Base in Honolulu from 1952-54. He practiced pediatrics in La Cañada, Calif., for 37 years and most recently was emeritus clinical professor of pediatrics at University of Southern California. He served as Southwest Pediatric Society president from 1975-76. Dr. Holroyd is survived by his wife, Marion, one son, three daughters, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
