IN MEMORIAM

Dr. Daeschner, former American Board of Pediatrics president

C. William Daeschner Jr., M.D., FAAP, of Galveston, Texas, died Sept. 5. He was 88. Active in medical education and standards setting for examinations, he served as president of the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) from 1974-’75.

Dr. Daeschner was chair of the AAP Medical Education Committee from 1965-’70 and the National Board of Medical Examiners in 1983. He led the group that developed the landmark ABP publication, Foundations for Evaluating the Competency of Pediatricians and was vice chair of the AAP Task Force on Pediatric Education, which produced the initial Future of Pediatric Education report.

Dr. Daeschner

Board-certified in pediatric nephrology and general pediatrics, he received his M.D. from University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), Galveston, in 1945, and interned at Hermann Hospital, Houston (1945-’46). Dr. Daeschner was captain and flight surgeon in the Air Force School of Aviation Medicine and the School of Aviation Physiology from 1946-’48. He then completed residency training at St. Louis Children’s Hospital (1948-50) and Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston (1950-’51).

He was on staff at Baylor University from 1951-’60, then became chairman of pediatrics at UTMB in Galveston, where he remained for 29 years. He then was appointed Ashbel Smith Professor Emeritus at UTMB.

Dr. Daeschner received the 1981 AAP Abraham Jacobi Award and the 1991 AAP Lifetime Achievement Award.

He is survived by his wife, six children, 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
