Medicare reform bill revises CLIA requirements

LEIGH ANN BLUESTEIN

Physician office laboratories would be exempt from the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA), under the House Medicare reform bill.

The proposal, passed on Oct. 12 by the House Commerce and Ways and Means committees, modifies CLIA to "relieve the burden of physician office clinical laboratories," according to a House leadership document.

AAP-backed legislation introduced earlier this year by Rep. Bill Archer (R-Texas) and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) is the basis for the provision. It seeks to restore physician office laboratories to pre-CLIA status.
